Ava DuVernay
Whether she’s making a film about an incarcerated teenager or a young woman’s struggle to get a college education, Ava DuVernay is constantly working to make the film industry more inclusive. She’s the first Black female filmmaker to direct a $100 million film and the only one to have her own movies nominated for Best Picture. Ava also co-founded the African American Film Festival Releasing Movement, which supports the release of Black independent films. She’s the director and executive producer of the HBO series Queen Sugar, which tells the story of three siblings who inherit a sugarcane farm.
Ava DuVernay is also the director of the Disney film A Wrinkle in Time. Her upcoming projects include a documentary about Prince and a DC comics adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time. She’s also slated to direct the film Battle of Versailles, and she’s a producer on the film’s sequel.
She’s the first woman of color to helm a live-action movie. She’s also the first black woman to be nominated for Best Director.
